2019: APC suffers setback as 14 senator decamps to PDP

The bid for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to retain power at the federal and popularity in the Senate in 2019 suffered a major setback as fourteen senators of the ruling party on Tuesday defected from their party to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The senators in a joint letter to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki informed him and their colleagues of their desire to leave their former party to join the PDP.

The letter reads:

Dear Senate President,

After due consultation, with our constituents and stakeholders in our constituency, in proper recognition section 16 (1G) of the 1999 constitution, and for the fact of our party, The All Progressives Congress, we hereby inform the Senate that we the undersigned;

Senators:

  1. Dino Melaye
  2. Barnabas Gemade
  3. Ibrahim Danbaba
  4. Shaaba Lafiaji

  2. Rafiu Ibrahim
  3. Suleiman Hunkuyi
  4. Isa Misau
  5. Monsurat Sunmonu
  6. Soji Akanbi
  7. Usman Nafada
  8. Musa Kwankwaso
  9. Suleiman Nazif
  10. Lanre Tejuosho

 

We hereby inform you that we are changing our political affiliation from APC to PDP. We thank you for your exemplary leadership.

In a follow-up announcement, Mr. Saraki said, Senator Abdulazaz Nyako, has also announced his defection.

The senator representing Oyo State, l Ms. Sumonu it was learnt disclosed that she left the APC for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and not the PDP.

Recall that the Senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dion Melaye had in a recent video where he mocked his former party stated that he can’t wait to go back to his home (PDP). This is even as he was spotted at the signing of MoU between the PDP and other political parties who formed coalition to retrieve back power from the APC ahead of the 2019 general election.

In a tweet on her handle; @MonsuratSpeaks the lawmaker giving reasons for her defection to ADC said “Today, 24 July 2018, a letter was read during the Senate Plenary announcing the defection of some Senators from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Please be advised that my defection is as a result of issues within the APC Oyo State Chapter…”
