The Abia State Commander of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Bamidele Akingbade has disclosed the intention of the agency to establish Drug Free Clubs in schools across the 17 local government areas of the state.
Akingbade in a chat with our reporter at the command headquarters of the agency in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state expressed worries over high level of intake and addiction of illicit drugs and substances among teenagers at both primary and secondary school students who are the .
The NDLEA boss who stated that the essence of the Drug Free Clubs is to sensitize the youths on the dangers of drug abuse among youths, added that the agency has started using youth corps members posted to various schools in the state to sensitize the youths on the dangers of consuming and abusing psychotropic substances; Tramadol, Codeine among others.
According to him, the drug agency is also working assiduously to see how they can convince the state Ministry of Education to introduce Drug Education in their curriculum which needs the approval of the Governor (Okezie Ikpeazu) to become effective.
Speaking further about the intended Drug Education, Akingbade said it would be easier for the teacher to use her professional skills and classroom management ability to teach and impact into the kids, dangers associated with illicit drug intake.

He added that the agency would be working with both the entire Local Government chairmen and traditional institutions in the rural areas on its planned aggressive rural campaign project against the use and sales of banned drugs and in the rural and urban areas respectively.
