President Buhari signs “Not Too Young to Run” Bill into law

Young Nigerians who wish to run for any political position at the state and national levels of government has heaved a sigh of relief as President Muhammdau Buhari today at the State House, signed into the “Not Too Young to Run” Bill into law.

 

This is coming about 48hrs after the President in his speech at the 19th anniversary of uninterrupted democracy in the country.

 

The signing of the bill which was witnessed by 36 youths selected from the states of the federation had the presence of some members of the Executive.

The President who jokingly asked the youths not to vie for Presidency next year said the new law permits the youths to vie the various political offices in the country.

 

According to him, the new law has reduced the age limit for those seeking places in the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly from 30 to 25 years while the people from 30 to 40years can contest the Governorship and Presidential seat.

President Buhari said the age limit has been reduced from 40 to 35 years old for those seeking the nation’s highest political office. This as he wondered why the age limit for Senate and state governors were not reduced in line with the original proposed bill.

 

Meanwhile senators and other Nigerians have hailed the signing of the bill by Buhari which they described as landmark in the history of the country’s democracy.

The senators including Mao Ohuabunwa of Abia North Senatorial District said that the “Not Too Young to Run” law is a gift that the 8th National Assembly was giving to Nigeria for the growth of democracy.
