It was a miraculous day for the occupants of the ground floor of a four storey building undergoing construction collapsed early Tuesday morning in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State.

The incident, our correspondent reports happened at No. 7 Nwaso Street off popular Port Harcourt Road in Aba South local government area of the state.
The occupants who were said to be in their sleep, at about 5am when the incident happened, were said to have escaped unhurt as the ground floor carrying the collapsed four storey remained intact, even as the time our correspondent visited the scene.

Our findings have it that officials of Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) have come to the site where samples of blocks and iron were taken and the premises sealed off to prevent people from gaining entry into scene of the incident.
The owner of the building was not around at the time of visiting the site of the incident.

Our correspondent however gathered that the owner and his family members including other relatives living in the building, numbering about 10 escaped unhurt as they were sleeping in their house when the building collapsed.
One of the neighbours who didn’t want to be mentioned confirmed they labourers worked on the fourth floor of the building throughout Monday and were expected to continue work Tuesday as they left some of their working tools in the building after close of work on Monday.

The neighbour said “about 5am when we are about to pray, my wife said that she was hearing some sounds.
“We checked and we didn’t see anything. We went ahead to pray. While we were praying, we heard a loud noise and before you know it, everywhere was covered by dust from the rubble.
“This building has been under construction for the last 15-16 years. Nobody can say exactly what was the cause of the collapse.

“We thank God there was no death. We only had some cars damaged by this incident. The owner of the building left with his family shortly after the incident happened.”
Another neighbour who also spoke anonymously disclosed that officials who introduced themselves to come from SON were at the scene earlier.

The source also disclosed that officials of GADA already visited the site and cordoned it off to avoid any movement to and from the collapse building premises.
Others who affirmed that the rob used in the construction of the building were of good quality, but however suspected the number of years it has taken to construct the building, the health of the blocks and substandard concrete mixtures as possible cause of the building collapse.
