Lawyer Reveals Why People Do Not Like Taking Matters To Police 

An Aba based lawyer and human rights activist, Barr. Gabriel Emperor Ogbonna has given insight to what happens at the police station when someone takes a matter to them.

Barr. Ogbonna who wrote on a post on his Facebook page “Police Station Nigeria Limited”, accused the police of monitizing their constitutional duties.

According to the lawyer, a complainant of a matter is subjected to all forms of payment before a matter is charged to court and even when the matter goes to court, the plaintiff is meant to carter for the transportation cost of the prosecutor throughout the court process.

Ogbonna, who ran for Aba Central Constituency seat of the Abia State House of Assembly in 2023 through his post alleged that the same police gets 10 percent of the money refunded to the Plaintiff.

You have a case against someone,

You report the case to the police. Then the police collect money from you for approval of petition.

Then the police collect money from you to investigate the case. Then the police collect money from you to go and arrest the suspect.

Then the police collect money from the suspect, big money, to grant him bail.

Then the police collect money from the two of you to go to the home of the suspect and conduct a search.

Then the police tell the two of you to go and settle. And after settlement, the police collect money from both of you to close the case.

If settlement does not work, then police collect money from you to remit the case to the prosecution department.

Then the head of prosecution collects money from you to refer it to the prosecutor.

Then police prosecutor collects money from you to charge the matter to court.

Then the police prosecutor collects money from you everyday the case is listed to prosecute the case.

You continue paying until you are drained. And if the suspect refunds money, police collect 10% of the money.

You see, in the end, the police wins. When you report a case, you just dug a goldmine for them.

No wonder Fela said that police station has become a bank, and the head of the police station has become bank manager.
