A 37-year-old man identified as Chiemela has reportedly been arrested for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl in a popular Street in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.
The suspect said to be a HIV carrier, who claimed to come from Ndioru in Ikwuano LGA, was accused of defiling the child after sneaking into the home of the innocent girl’s parents when the mother left the child in the house to go and buy some items that she needed at home, from shops in the street.
He was said to have taken the little girl into one of the rooms in the building, where he raped her and inflicted injuries on her private part.
The suspect was said to have ran out of luck when the mother of the victim returned home to meet her daughter in pain with drops of blood observed inside the room.
The terrified mother reportedly raised an alarm, which attracted neighbours to the scene.
A neighbour who saw the alleged rapist enter the house promptly identified him, leading to his apprehension.
During interrogation by the crowd that had gathered at the scene, the suspect reportedly denied defiling the little girl but claimed that “I only carried her on my laps and touched her in the genitals.”
He further claimed that he came to repay the N3,000 debt he owed someone in the yard.
Chiemela, who blamed the devil for his evil act, was later handed over to the Police for investigation and prosecution.
The Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka was yet to respond to text message sent to her WhatsApp messenger at the time of filing the report.
It was however learnt that the command was already investigating the matter.
Information however has it that the suspect is a HIV carrier, according to sources that know him.
