The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that it will soon disclose its decision regarding the status of the embattled Resident Electoral Commissioners for Abia and Sokoto States.

INEC spokesman, Festus Okoye, made this known on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” programme.

According to Okoye, both the RECs for Sokoto and Abia states are currently not at their duty posts. He assured the public that the commission would take a position on their cases and communicate it to Nigerians in due course.

Prior to the governorship elections held on March 18, INEC had withdrawn the RECs for Abia, Ike Uzochukwu, and Sokoto, Nura Ali.

While Uzochukwu was accused of mishandling logistics, which allegedly undermined the electoral process, Ali was accused of failing to declare results for all the National Assembly seats. Consequently, they were not allowed to officiate during the subsequent governorship and state assembly polls.

When asked about the current status of Uzochukwu and Ali, Okoye stated that the commission would soon announce its decision.

He also mentioned that INEC would take action regarding the case of Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended REC in Adamawa State, whose situation is distinct from that of his counterparts in Sokoto and Abia.

“Very soon, the commission will take a position relating to what happens to them. The moment the commission takes a position, it will be communicated to Nigerians.

“The issue around the Sokoto REC and the issue around the Abia REC are completely different from issues surrounding the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State. They are completely different, but in terms of these two Resident Electoral Commissioners (Sokoto and Abia), very soon, the commission will take a position and Nigerians will be informed of the position of the commission,” Okoye said.
