The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has ordered full scale investigation into the death of seven members of one Mr. Jessy at Umueze village in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state.
Recall that Infonet9ja.com had reported that seven out of nine persons that ate popular meat barbecue (Suya) and took fruit juice, reportedly died hours after consuming the said appetizer.
Ikpeazu, in a statement on Thursday by the Information Commissioner, Mr. John Okiyi Kalu while stating that the state government would take care of the medical bills of the survivors, also called on Abians to remain calm.
The governor who also ordered for a comprehensive medical autopsy in order to ascertain the cause of their death, stated that only a proper medical autopsy would reveal the true cause of the deceased death.
The statement read “Abia State Government has received the sad report involving a family in Umueze, Umuahia North LGA, where some of its members allegedly died as a result of food poisoning after consumption of barbecue meat popularly known as suya and some fruit juice.
“While we commiserate with the family and friends of the bereaved, we wish to call for calm and patience to enable relevant medical authorities properly determine the cause of death of the seven persons that reportedly lost their lives.
“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed authorities of the relevant medical facility where the surviving family members were treated and discharged to ensure a comprehensive autopsy for those who lost their lives.
“As is the standard practice worldwide, only a proper medical autopsy can determine the cause of death and as soon as the report is available we will make same public.
“The government wishes to call on all citizens and residents to maintain vigilance and remain law abiding as we have mobilized all relevant agencies of government to properly investigate the incident.
