A Policeman serving in Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police Force whose name cannot be immediately ascertained has reportedly killed a yet-to-be identified colleague.
The incident, sources said, happened at Bata junction along the ever-busy Aba-Owerri road.
Sources around the area told our correspondent that the incident forced motorists and other road users to scamper for safety to avoid being hit by stray bullets.
According to a source who gave his name as Clement “I was approaching Bata junction when we heard the sound of a gun. Being that unknown gunmen attacked an army checkpoint at Ariaria junction and knowing that there is an army outpost around Bata junction, I and a few others took to safety.
“It was later that we learnt that it was a police officer that shot his colleague at the Bata junction. According to the story that we heard, a police patrol van pulled beside two boys who were having dreadlocks. The police officers jumped down from the back of the car and ordered the boys to enter their car.
“The boys apparently felt that they didn’t commit any crime and resisted the attempt to force them into the police van. It was said that one of the police officers corked his gun and ordered the boys to hop into the patrol van.
“The boys obeyed at that point and entered the van. While the other colleague had entered, the one standing on the ground was about hopping into the van when suddenly his gun fired at his colleague, apparently because he forgot putting it back to safety mode.
“We were told that the boys that they even arrested took advantage of the situation to take to their heels after the incident sent people including other colleagues of theirs to scamper for safety.”
