Abia Assembly Frowns at Abia Polytechnic's Loss of Accreditation

The member representing Umunneochi State Constituency in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, Hon. Barr. Okey Igwe has raised alarm over what he described as incessant attack by Fulani herdsmen on his constituents.

Igwe in a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised during the plenary of members of the State House of Assembly prayed the House to mandate the Committee on Agriculture to interface with the Traditional Rulers in Umunneochi with a bid to find a lasting solution to the incessant attacks.

The lawmaker who feared the continued safety of his constituents also prayed the Leadership of the State House of Assembly to urge the Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and relevant security agencies in the state to wade into the situation in order to avoid loss of lives.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedum E. Orji in responding to the cry of his colleague said the Abia State House of Assembly at its 6th Session had already done something about such situations by passing the anti-grazing Law adding that what is required is the implementation of the Law.

“All that is required is to bring the Law into Force”, he said.

The House in its resolution agreed that the Law (on anti-grazing) which has already been passed into law by the 6th Assembly be fully implemented.

The lawmakers also directed the Chief Security Officers of the 17 local government areas in the state liaise with relevant security agencies in their respective LGAs, including the Abia State Vigilante Service to support their security networks.

This is even as they directed the Ministry of Homeland Security to sit up and ensure the implementation of the anti-grazing law passed by the Abia State House of Assembly.

Reports emerging from the agrarian community, has it that the activities of cattle herders in the area has negatively impacted on their productivity, as many stated that they have long stopped going to their farms over fear of being killed or attacked by the herdsmen who have turned their farms to grazing field.
