The Umuahia/Ikwuano federal constituency 2019 candidate of the Labour Party, Abia State chapter, Ambassador Charles Nzechi has commended the leadership of Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN), Abia wing for its initiative to organize debate for candidates of various political parties in the state.

Nzechi in a post on his official facebook handle noted that the importance of the media in helping members of the public in choosing who leads them cannot be overemphasized.

According to him, if Nigeria must move from a developing to developed country, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and its affiliates must embrace its responsibilities of ensuring that only competent persons were elected into elective offices and positions to represent the people.

Writing on his facebook handle Nzechi said “The journalism profession in advanced countries play major role in ensuring the election of competent persons into public offices. If we must move from a developing to developed country, NUJ and it’s affiliates must stand up to the duty of ensuring the election of competent persons into public offices by organising debates in ALL the electoral categories.

“This is absolutely necessary as It would offer the public the opportunity to make informed assessment of the candidates and make informed decision to vote aright; as well as hold the elected accountable to their declarations and promises. That is the only way to foster a better society.
