Barring any last minute change by the leadership of the Nigerian Army (NA), the 2018 edition of the annual military exercise in the southeast states of the country; Operation Python Dance otherwise known as Egwueke would be kicking off next week Wednesday December 26.
This year’s edition would mark the third successive running of the military exercise in the five Southeastern States after it was kicked off in 2016.
A source within the President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barrack, 14Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia who would not want its name mentioned said that the choice for December 26 was deliberate.
According to the source, aims and objectives of the exercise remains the same; to tackle any form of insecurity and security threat such as cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, child stealing and child trafficking in the region and above all to ensure that there was peace as the people celebrate the yuletide.
The source who stated that the southeast and Abia in particular remains paramount to the economic development of the region, Nigeria and West Africa at large, warned against any person or group of persons that would want to breach the peace being experienced in the Southeast and Abia State in particular.
“Mind you that Nigeria has very important activity early in the New Year(2019 General Election). This year’s exercise (Egwueke III) will dovetail into the New Year.
“Abians and those that will be visiting the state can be rested assured of their safety and can also be rest assured that we (army) are not resting on our oars. We will make sure that they will celebrate this Christmas peacefully with their loved ones.
“By that time, you and I know that majority of the people who live in the urban areas would have traveled to their various villages where various activities will be going on.
“It is important that we ensure that nobody takes advantage of their absence to cause damage on their shops and homes. While our guard posts in various locations would ensure that lives and properties of persons in the rural areas are protected.
“For those thinking that they can come here and foment trouble, they are advised to look elsewhere because they are going to meet their waterloo. We have strategically mapped out some of the black spots in the state.
