Apparently miffed by the number of request for recognition and award of chieftaincy among other titles, popular female lawmaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mrs. Maria Ude Nwachi asked individuals and organizations planning to honour her with an award to jettison such moves.
Nwachi, Minority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly is currently the member representing Afikpo North-East State Constituency elected under the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA) in 2015 while recently she defected to the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) under whose umbrella she is contesting for Afikpo North and South Federal Constituency in 2019 general election.
The lawmaker, popularly known as Afikpo chic in a post on a facebook group which she also pioneers (Igboist Group) gave some of the reasons why she has chosen not receive any award at the moment and what could make her accept awards in the future.
Apart from rejecting awards, the lawmaker also disclosed that she would not be accepting chieftaincy titles and that she should be addressed by her name and not by her title as a lawmaker that goes with the Hon. Attached to their names.

“ATTENTION EARTH: I Do Not Accept Awards.
“AWARDS: I do not accept awards. At least not yet. There is no circumstance I can think of that will make me accept any award now. I am new in politics, I have not done anything, not even 1% percent of my aims and goals for being in politics. In fact; as it stands; I have done nothing, nada, zero, zilch. Aka azukohaagi agwa obu (the beans have not even been bought). I have not even started. No, I do not yet deserve any award. Igboland don get seaport?
“Inukwa. Wetin I carry this my open eye dey do nah? No individual, establishment or organization should contact me for any award because I will refuse it blankly. I get contacted constantly for one award or another regularly. Biko nu, I NEVER REACH. When I reach, I will know and will begin to think of such. For now, I will blankly refuse all awards. I must make an earth-shattering impact, plus there must be steady light in this nation, before I can think of such. I would be highly embarrassed to stand anywhere and accept any award now. I can’t afford such distraction under any circumstance; at the moment.
“24 HOUR STEADY LIGHT: Until Nigeria becomes a normal nation, with 24 hour steady light. No one should ever dream of me collecting an award. Chai, shame will kill me if I try such. Let STEADY LIGHT happen and I will even give myself an award and collect it with wild smiles and joy. But until there is 24 hour steady light in this country, no think am.
“NOTE: If I reject an award from you or your organization; do not take it personal; because it is not personal. This is my personal principle. I did not have anyone in mind when I made this personal rule. And I cannot compromise my personal integrity or belief to please anyone. I may support your organization financially, at my discretion, but do not mention my name anywhere on your award ceremony. I recently rejected an award with a monetary prize on it that will sound it crystal clear that I am not joking about this. It’s not personal, just my thing. Thanks for understanding in advance.
“CHIEFTANCY TITLES: Firstly, I am a woman, and I do not personally accept nor believe that a woman should be conferred with a chieftaincy title. I am not a titles type. I detest such for myself. Again that is my personal belief and opinion which I am entitled to. To establishments and organizations that contact me to confer me with Chieftaincy titles, my answer will remain NO forever and forever. Others please take note.
“EHUGBO PEOPLE: My everything, my darlindas, has a honorific (a title that conveys esteem or respect when used in addressing or referring to a person) for me; Ezenwanyi; which in Ehugbo simply means Queen of Women or Woman of wealth. Ours has no other connotation. That is what I’m generally known as in my town. It is not a chieftaincy title; they just started calling me that many decades ago and it stuck. That is enough for me. More than enough for me; in this lifetime.
“HONOURABLE: My official title; Honourable, which I earned, being that I am an elected state house of assembly member, I do not use. Neither my complimentary card, letter head, etc; has anything Honourable in them; just my name, as is. If I cannot bring myself to address myself as Honourable; that should then make it crystal clear that I’m not into titles of any kind or type. In a nation that is in darkness, I can’t bring myself to bear such title.
“Gist: My manager, Iheukwumere Okogwu Otu, was not happy that I refused to put honourable in my complimentary card so he devised another means to compel me to do that, he told me that it is against the rule of house of assembly nationwide not to put honourable in a card or letter head and that it could lead to my suspension, my people when I heard suspension, I quickly told the printer to add Hon. to my name. When the card and stationary came, I refused to give it out. I was embarrassed. A week later I threw them all away and told my manager it was better I did not have any card and letterhead; as I am highly ashamed and embarrassed in addressing myself as Hon in my card and letterhead. He then opened up to me that he made up the suspension part that I can go ahead and print one without the Hon. I just wanted to kill him lol.
“Note: I have no problem with anyone addressing me as Honourable or whatever title that comes with my position, but just don’t expect me to address myself that way too. I have no issue with others bearing honourable and other titled, it’s just that while I lived in America, I never saw any politician bear any title, and they got things done. I just can’t bring myself to bear any freaking title. But I will be glad to address others in their titles.
