Since leaving office, Ikpeazu has moved on with remarkable humility. He now engages in national and international affairs with quiet dignity.
Yet, ironically, those far beneath him in the political hierarchy continue to invoke his name, attempting to drag him into every controversy and conspiracy.
He no longer seeks the spotlight, but somehow, the spotlight refuses to leave him.
He is the most insulted, often by political outlaws, neophytes, and desperate opportunists scavenging for relevance, yet he remains the most forgiving. The most misunderstood, yet the most politically relevant.
There is something about Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu that unsettles his critics and terrifies those who view him as a political roadblock. He remains a true enigma, a calm storm they can neither predict nor contain.
One of his greatest qualities is an uncommon spirit of forgiveness. This was clearly on display recently when a group of Ukwa-La-Ngwa stakeholders visited him. Reflecting on the 2023 elections, he told them he suffered no personal loss or political injury.
However, he added with characteristic humility: “The mark of a good leader is to ensure that both the vessel and the people are safe as you take them to shore.”
He is not the first governor whose preferred successor failed to emerge, nor is he the first sitting governor to lose a senatorial bid.
Yet, curiously, even those who couldn’t win their own polling units in the last general election still blame him.
Those who betrayed themselves, or allowed others to manipulate and sabotage their electoral victories, somehow still point fingers at Ikpeazu. Why? Because his shadow still looms large over Abia’s political landscape.
Even the current Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, appears unable to escape the influence of Ikpeazu’s enigmatic political legacy.
Otti still seems fixated on the 2015 and 2019 election years, when he lost to Ikpeazu.
Today, nearly every policy, speech, or political maneuver feels like a response to a man who is no longer on the ballot. It’s as if he’s running a race against a ghost.
Someone should remind him: Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has moved on. Politically, Ikpeazu remains far ahead, in experience, maturity, and relevance.
For those planning alliances ahead of 2027, there is one persistent question: What is Ikpeazu doing? What is he thinking?
His actions, or even his silence, have become the barometer for their next political moves. He is their silent obsession. He unsettles them.
A simple thank-you visit by some of Ikpeazu’s former appointees has already caused sleepless nights across political camps in Abia.
What should have been a harmless gesture of appreciation is now being twisted into a conspiracy theory.
Rumours swirl, some say he’s preparing grounds to joining the APC, others allege that President Tinubu has mandated him to galvanize Abia for him, while others claim the G-5 is plotting something.
Make no mistake about this, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu remains one of the most influential and respected leaders within the PDP, and he is perfectly comfortable where he is.
Ikpeazu embodies what many politicians lack: grace, resilience, and strategic depth. This explains the fear, suspicion, and speculation that surround this unassuming man.
He doesn’t speak often, but when he does, or when he acts, the ripple is felt across the state. He remains a rallying point for what lies ahead.
